I believe that Mariam was formed throughout her life to try to find the positive in things considering that she was often treated so negatively, especially by Rasheed. Therefore, I believe that anyone who was treated in this manner would be able to perform such a task considering that they tried to overlook the harsh way they were being treated. (Ian Clough)

There were two things that shaped Mariam's courage and ability to kill Rasheed. One of those things was her love for Laila. Mariam had lost so many of her loved ones, and Laila was all she had left. Mariam was able to kill Rasheed, knowing that if she did not, he was going to kill Laila. Another force that drove Mariam to do this was her hate for Rasheed. Rasheed had hurt her so many times, instilling a deep hatred in Mariam. Anyone who was so overwhelmed by the emotions of love and hatred could have the courage to perform a task like this.
