Topic: From the novel we meet many different characters all with different backgrounds- from Irish to Abenaki, with each individual having different traditions and views on the world. How has this diversity shaped our lives today in our small, close-knit towns?

From experience, I still see these close communities thriving today. It's a unique quality, especially in northern Vermont. And the idea that everyone knows each other and their business is still very much alive. With diversity, our culture is enriched which makes us leaders for the rest of the country. We have grown from the "Yankee" ideal of the time and pushed on to become a leader, like becoming the first state to legalize same-sex marriage to being part of the civil rights movement. Vermont's diverse beginning to the 20th century has helped shaped the many lives of Vermonters today. (Autumn Lee)

It allows small towns to be very diverse while at the same time working well together. Small communities thrive off the diversity because it allows them to be open to more ideas, jobs, etc. If you drive through a small Vermont town you can see the diversity around you, each town is different. Thanks to this diversity most individuals can move to this state and thrive here because we accept different cultures well.
