What significance do the birds (and their migration) have in the book? What do the birds represent?

"I think that the birds can represent different things. On one hand, migration represents the souls of the plane crash victims moving on to the afterlife (the birds being the victims). However, the birds can also represent the loved ones left behind. Here, the migration represents the loved ones moving on with their lives after the death of the victims. Trachis Island is also significant in this comparison, for, like birds coming back after migration, the families of the victims regularly return to the island." (Anna Pomerville)
